The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has advised the City of Bayonne about both ongoing and upcoming Bayonne Bridge construction activities.
Weekend closures: The Bayonne Bridge will be closed during the third weekend in August. Due to construction activities, the bridge will close at midnight on Friday, August 15, and reopen on Sunday, August 17, at 4:00 p.m.
Street closures: Gertrude Street will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday. There will be no weekend closures on Gertrude Street.
The portion of West 4th Street under the bridge continues to be closed. While this section of 4th Street is closed, vehicles can continue to enter from Kennedy Boulevard or Avenue A for local access only. No through traffic can travel under the bridge.
Juliette Street was closed beginning Thursday, August 7, and is scheduled to be closed for up to thirty days.
Street Maintenance: The Port Authority has requested its main contractor, Skanska, to start sweeping the curbs and to remove debris from the catch basins.
Grass Cutting: The Port Authority has spoken to Skanska about the importance of cutting the grass continuously within the Bayonne Bridge work zone.
Saw Cutting: Work crews are removing the bridge’s existing concrete piers. Work is underway at Pier #10 between Gertrude Street and 3rd Street.
Sheet Pile Work: Sheet pile work for Pier N 12, which stands between Juliette Street and 4th Street, was scheduled to be completed on Friday, August 8. Sheet pile work for Pier N 6 (north of 1st Street) and Pier N 7 (between 1st and 2nd Street) continues, and is scheduled to be completed on or about Monday, August 25. Following the sheet pile work, drill shaft work will begin, and is expected to take about eight weeks.
4th Street Piling: Work continues on the piling on 4th Street.
5th Street Sewer and Water Pipe: The new sewer is connected to the Bayonne sewer system.
Mechanical building at 6th Street and Avenue A: Concrete pads are being poured for this facility.
Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall: Work on the wall is ongoing. This wall runs from 6th Street to Margaret Street.
Verizon Utility Work: This work was scheduled to begin on August 11.
Oversized Truck Deliveries Dry Run and Twenty-Minute Hold Test: On Thursday, August 7, the Port Authority held a dry run to the bridge with an oversized delivery truck. The bridge was closed for two twenty-minute periods as part of this process.
