We are sure you heard by now, but a group of Bayonne residents is seeking to recall Mayor Jimmy Davis. This effort is being spearheaded by a few ex-Davis loyalists. This move indicates a few things, one is that Davis is even more of a failure as a politician than he is as a mayor. Some people would like you to believe that Davis is immune to such recall attempts. Well, he isn’t. The recall system exists in order to hold elected officials accountable for their promises during a campaign. Will the nearly 9,000 signatures be hard to get? Sure, but it can be done. People seem to forget, the same guy spearheading this recall is the same guy who ran a stellar campaign for Davis, and even Davis has acknowledged that much. You can’t have it both ways — he can get it done, just like he helped get Davis elected. If the recall attempt fails, it will be yet another chink in Davis armor. There is no silver lining in this for Davis. And don’t use West New York as an example — different people, different politics. You don’t have to go far in the State of New Jersey to learn that Bayonne is a unique town, and when the people go sour on you, they never come back.
That said, the real story isn’t the recall itself. It is the fact that Davis put together a motley crew of politicos and community leaders to get elected. He brought people together who were dissatisfied with the way their government was being run. Almost all of those scattered parts have turned on Davis. Who does Davis have left? He is surrounded by people who know little about campaigning or Bayonne politics. People who if you spun them around on 2nd Street and told them to get to Winners, they would have no idea without Google Maps. So, win lose or draw in the recall effort, Davis has huge problems going into 2018. Half the people in Bayonne voted against Davis, and he hasn’t won any friends over, trust us. Either he doesn’t know this, doesn’t care, or doesn’t understand this. One thing is for certain though, the day of reckoning is coming for Davis. The only question is when?
Bayonne is in terrible shape. Taxes are going up, again. The City is operating with a large budget deficit, and Davis has not fulfilled one campaign promise, not one — if you can name one leave it in the comments below. So does he deserve to be recalled? Sure he does. Why wouldn’t he? The recall system exists for the Davis case, he is the personification of a recall. He was the least qualified candidate for Mayor and it has showed big time. So for the sake of Bayonne, people better pray that the recall works. Bayonne cannot afford another 2 years of Davis.
