PSE&G will be carrying out a gas main replacement project during March and April 2015 in the vicinity of East 11th Street and Avenue E. The utility’s contractor, Henkels and McCoy, will be pulling out an existing section of a twelve-inch gas pipe and replacing it with a new one. The gas main change-out project will begin on or about Monday, March 9, weather permitting. The work is expected to last for four to five weeks, until some point in April, depending on weather and other factors.
The work is being timed to coincide with a temporary shutdown for maintenance at the Bayonne Cogen facility in March and April.
The contractor will need to excavate below the elevated section of the Light Rail line around 11th Street and Avenue E. No impact on Light Rail train service is expected. There will be some traffic detours and no parking areas in effect during the project. Signs announcing any traffic or parking impacts will be posted as needed in the area bounded by Linnet Street at the southern end, Avenue E on the eastern side, East 12thStreet at the northern end, and Broadway on the western side. Some work on weekends is expected, in order for the project to be completed before the Cogen plant reopens in April.
