As heated talk of oversized redevelopment swirls above the bridge, the Davis administration is quietly advancing plans to allow a similar giant high rise apartment building at 5th Street and Broadway. Recently the Bayonne Planning Board approved a redevelopment study including the property formerly occupied by Pamrapo Savings Bank.
Informed sources report to Bayonne Local that the way was being paved for a local developer with plans for 8th Street and 46th Street to move forward with a similar high rise building at 5th Street and Broadway. Area residents were shocked to discover that a study was conducted by the city without their involvement or knowledge. The study is the first step towards designating the area as being in need of redevelopment. An anonymous city hall source stated that this is the way they are getting around the local zoning ordinance. By the time the public gets wind of the project, its too late. Residents have recently banded together to oppose these oversized buildings that are incompatible with the surrounding neighborhoods. The City of Bayonne could not be reached for comment.
