Niekrasz Named Bayonne Police Chief, Sisk to Serve as Deputy Chief

Acting Police Chief Drew Niekrasz has been promoted to Chief of Police, and that Captain Drew Sisk has been promoted to Deputy Chief. Their promotion ceremony took place Thursday, July 24, in the City Council Chambers.

United States Magistrate Madeline Cox Arleo administered the oath of office to Chief Niekrasz, who is her cousin. Acting Bayonne Corporation Counsel Susan Ferraro administered the oath to Deputy Chief Sisk, who is her husband.

Public Safety Director Robert Kubert, a former Police Chief, called Chief Niekrasz and Deputy Chief Sisk “professional and dedicated individuals.” Director Kubert cited their “dedication, professionalism, and work ethic.”

At the ceremony, all of the City Council Members congratulated Chief Niekrasz and Deputy Chief Sisk. City Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski observed that both police leaders are “well-respected by their colleagues.” She said that the occasion of their ceremony was “a proud day for the whole City of Bayonne.” Speaking as a former state police Captain and past Hudson County Sheriff, Council Member At-Large Juan Perez recalled the satisfaction of knowing “how it feels to be promoted.” First Ward Council Member Tom Cotter thanked both Chief Niekrasz and Deputy Chief Sisk “for their service” to the people of Bayonne. Second Ward Council Member congratulated both men on their happy occasion. Third Ward Council Member Gary LaPelusa called the police promotions “the culmination of twenty-six years of dedication to this town.”

In his remarks, Chief Niekrasz recalled his first day as a police officer, “one of the busiest ever,” July 4, 1988, when a fireworks disaster in the county park injured spectators. That experience taught him the need for “vigilance,” Chief Niekrasz said. He cited the recent killing of Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago as proof that “a quiet day or night can turn to tragedy.” He pledged his commitment “to reduce crime and the fear of crime.” Chief Niekrasz thanked his police colleagues and former supervisors for the lessons they have taught him. Their “knowledge, friendship, and experience remain with me,” Chief Niekrasz said. He concluded, “It is with great pride that I accept this post as Chief, the nineteenth Chief of Police.”

Chief Niekrasz is serving now in his twenty-seventh year with the Bayonne Police Department. Drew Niekrasz was appointed to the Bayonne Police Department on March 21, 1988. He served his first ten years with the department in the Uniformed Patrol Division. He was promoted to Police Sergeant in 1994, Police Lieutenant in 1999, and Police Captain in 2003. He has been Deputy Chief of Police since 2007. Throughout his career, he has served as a Street Supervisor, a department Training Officer, a Unit Commander, and Division Commander for both the Administrative and Patrol Divisions.

Chief Niekrasz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in the Administration of Justice from Rutgers University and a Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Training and Development from Seton Hall University. He is a graduate of the 242nd Session of the FBI National Academy, the 142nd Class of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, and the 52nd Session of the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police.

Chief Niekrasz is the son of Frank and Alice Niekrasz, and one of six children. He is a third-generation member of Hudson County’s public safety community, with his father having served over thirty years as a Captain with the Jersey City Fire Department, and his maternal grandfather having served with the Jersey City Police Department. He is married to the former Maureen O’Donnell, and they have three children: Emily, Austin, and Kyle.

Deputy Chief Sisk is serving in his twenty-seventh year with the Bayonne Police Department. He was appointed to the department in 1988. He was promoted to Police Sergeant in 1999, Police Lieutenant in 2003, and has served as a Police Captain since 2006.

During his career, Deputy Chief Sisk has served as a Patrol Officer, Narcotics Detective, Training Officer, Administrative Bureau Commander, and most recently as a Patrol Division Platoon Commander.

Deputy Chief Sisk is the son of Donald and Denise Sisk, and is one of four children. His brother Gary serves as a Bayonne firefighter, and his brother-in-law Tim Wilgus serves as a Detective Sergeant with the Bayonne Police Department.

Deputy Chief Sisk is married to Susan Ferraro, who serves as the City of Bayonne’s Acting Corporation Counsel. They have a five-year-old daughter, Jordan.
