BAYONNE – Teachers used the power of protest to force an agreement on a new contract at Bayonne’s City Hall meeting Tuesday.
Nearly 100 educators descended on Mayor Jimmy Davis’ first session of office hours to complain about stalled contract negotiations.
Teachers have been working for nearly five years without a contract. Many teachers expected to simply speak out, what they didn’t expect was reaching a deal during the meeting.
“I have a 7-year-old who’s going into second grade,” says Davis. “I didn’t want him going back to school with the teachers feeling this way….This is about moving everybody in the right direction.”
The teachers’ union actually endorsed Bayonne’s newly-elected mayor hoping he’d hammer out a deal.
There is now an oral agreement. It will need to be voted on by union membership.
